Archbishop Emeritus Sylvain Lavoie OMI

Your Holiness,

As an emeritus archbishop, I am kept quite busy giving missions and retreats in which I try to connect faith and life. I am finding when a space is created where it is safe to share, women especially open up with the pain they carry, often related to sexual abuse, feeling unheard and not valued within the church, and stifled by the patriarchal nature of the church.

The example of the leadership of L’Arche in dealing with the scandal around their founder, Jean Vanier, in such a direct, transparent and responsible way, is an inspiration to me, and one I so much want to see in the leadership of our dear and wounded church.

I feel compelled to add my voice to those women (and men) who are speaking out for a more equal and responsible role in the decision-making levels of the church, adding a richness of wisdom and experience and compassion of which the church has been denied far too long.

Sincerely, in Christ,

Archbishop Emeritus Sylvain Lavoie OMI
